Spiritual Journey

The mural was commissioned for the 400 sqft exterior of a San Francisco Chinese restaurant, a Victorian building. It is about a crane finding its soul mate. The hope was to infuse a hint of Chinese culture into the Lower Haight neighborhood. The style is inspired by Chinese cloisonné 掐丝珐琅. The gold outlines imitates the metal wires which are applied to the surface of a cloisonné object. The color palette is composed of malachite green and cinnabar lacquer red (剔红), which are often found in Chinese antiques, including egg yolk yellow (姜黄), bright turquoise (粉青) and ruby-red (胭脂红) from the imperial monochrome ceramics during Yongzheng period.”
